Impacts on People

While a large portion of this website focuses on the environmental impacts of wastewater pollution, the impacts on human well-being are broadly understood to have a range of significant negative effects. Wastewater pollution undermines local economies, livelihoods, public health, social equity, water access, food security, and coastal resilience. Connections between wastewater pollution and climate change have the potential for amplification of both threats when they interact and should be given greater attention. Some examples of impacts on human well-being are outlined here, but as one dives deeper, the intersectionality of this threat makes it clear that the impacts are far reaching and complex – well beyond what is provided here. We will continue to update as we discover new information and encourage you to share with us so that we may provide broader understanding for those seeking to learn more.
